Has anyone used or have an opinion on the use of synthetic oils in engines and gearboxes. If so any recommendations as to make or type?
Thanks

Re: Synthetic oils in engine and gearbox
Synthetic oils are perfect for our cars.
Motul SV 300 for instance is 100% synthetic and ideal in 20/50 or 20/60.
Motul also for gearbox, any type will do.

Confirming using Motul LeMans 20/60 for decades on R5A tuned, 1300 Gordiniand 1600 Gordini. Never had a problem with the oil (but you can always blame the engine when something goes wrong). Also using the Motul gear competition 75/140 which gave nice results on GB, more so if it has some mileage.

Re: Synthetic oils in engine and gearbox
Thank you, this sounds very positive. I have been getting very good oil pressure in my engine, 1565cc, but on the last two outings when arriving back home, oil warning light has come on and pressure dropped away to almost nothing whilst idling. Weather has been very hot so wondering if the oil has been thinning and whether synthetic oil will hold its viscosity better. Idling at 1,000 rpm and steady.
Does synthetic oil in the gearbox lead to smoother gear changes?

Re: Synthetic oils in engine and gearbox
Synthetic oil of good quality ( this means expansive!) helps keep the pressure higher when the engine is hot.
Motul is an example but i would avoid Castrol R which, I was told, is leaving some depots in the oil pan.
You can expect some improvment with a high viscosity oil in the gearbox.
As JyL says, Motul gear competition 75/140 may help.
